The Service

The memorial service is an act of Christian worship.  Its purposes are

  • to glorify God as the Author and Finisher of life,
  • to bear witness to the resurrection of Jesus Christ and our hope of eternal life in Him,
  • to comfort the grieving with the promises of Scripture, and
  • to gives thanks for the life and faith of the one who has died.

Our Presbyterian Book of Order requires that a member of the pastoral staff be responsible for planning and conducting the memorial service.

A member of our pastoral staff will want to meet with you as soon as possible after a death occurs to extend care and support, and to go over the following information in making arrangements for the memorial service.

Disposition of the Body

Interment (burial), cremation, or donation for medical purposes are all appropriate.  When a graveside service is desired, the practice most common among Presbyterians is for this to take place at the burial site

before the service in the sanctuary. However, other practices may be followed if approved by the officiating pastor.

Scheduling

Our church building and staff are available for memorial services Monday through Friday.  Service times are set as church program schedules permit.

Format of the Service

The Pastoral staff will plan the service with you in accord with our church practices, and will strive to include favorite scripture and hymn choices. Please consult with a Pastor prior to asking other speakers to participate. Others may wish to share memories at the reception. Photos and videos may be shared at the reception as well.

Bulletins & Recording

Our office staff will produce a worship bulletin which includes the order of service, participants' names, family information, and suggestions for remembrances.

We will record the service and provide CD copies which will be available for you after the reception.

Memorial Gifts

The family's preference for memorial gifts

can include ministries of Lake Grove Presbyterian Church. If another organization is preferred, please provide the mailing address for the bulletin.

The resurrection is a central doctrine of Christian faith and shapes Christians’ attitudes and responses to the event of death.  Death brings loss, sorrow, and grief to all.  In the face of death Christians affirm with tears and joy the hope of the gospel.  Christians do not bear bereavement in isolation but are sustained by the power of the Spirit and the community of faith.  The church offers a ministry of love and hope to all who grieve.

Flowers & Guest Book

The family is asked to provide flowers for the Communion Table.

Flowers delivered to the church will be placed in the sanctuary and reception area.  We encourage you to take all floral arrangements with you following the service.  However, you may choose to leave the communion table flowers for Sunday worship.  If so, an announcement will be placed in the worship bulletin stating flowers were provided by the family in memory of your loved one.

We suggest you provide a guest book for family and friends to sign as they arrive for the service.

Music at the Service

All music at the memorial service must be appropriate to Christian worship and consistent with the message of God's victory over death and our hope in Christ. Hymns sung by the congregation are always appropriate. Normally our church organist will play for all memorial services.   Other instrumental music and/or special vocal music may be included if approved by the officiating pastor.

Reception

Volunteer coordinators will assist in arranging a simple reception following the memorial service. Coffee, tea, punch and cookies will be provided in order to allow you and your family to visit with friends after the service.

Fees

There is no charge for the use of  the church facilities or pastoral services  for members of our church.

The fee for either our organist or pianist is $150.00, and a vocal soloist is $150.00.  These fees may be paid at your initial planning conference or on the day of the service.
